Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

The person who is known as Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is very popularly known as “Shahenshah-e-Qawwali”, which means The King of Qawwali.  The great Qawwal was born in Faisalabad. His real name was Pervaiz Fateh Ali Khan. Fateh Ali was his surname and Khan was his cast.  Mubarak mujahid Ali khan his teacher who was also his uncle taught him all the technicalities of Qawwali after his father. Farrukh Fateh Ali khan his younger brother and father of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan always accompanied him during Qawwali sessions.

icQawwaliThe Great Fateh Ali Khan was his father who taught him the art of Qawwali in his last days of life.  In the beginning, Nusrat’s father forced him to pursue some professional career like medicine or engineering. But he showed the least interest in the studies. In his early education, the famous Political Commentator Hassan Nissar was also his class fellow. Both Nissar and Nusrat’s families have good family terms and are still emotionally attached.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan showed the keen interest in Music since early days, he wished to continue his family tradition and to take forward his family legacy. In the beginning, everyone in his family and outside criticized him and disapproved of his joining the family Qawwali business, but he was iron-willed and kept on working hard on his own. Finally, his family and the rest of the world acknowledged his presence. He kept on practicing Qawwali day and night to master that skill. He performed for the first time at the age of 16 on the occasion of his father’s chelum, at the age of 23 he became the head of the family Qawwali party.

He recorded hundreds of Qawwalies and performed in more than 40 countries. His voice is melodious enough to be heard and re-sung up till now. His biggest achievement is that he merged western music with eastern poetry, his innovation in Qawwali was criticized back home in the beginning but with each passing day, his Dam Mast Qalander was on everyone’s tongue. He through his innovative and unique style extended his family legacy of 600 years.

He was kind at heart and supported noble causes with great zeal, he assisted Imran Khan in collecting donations for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. Out of his students, the most renowned are Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Asif Santo Ali Khan. He died at the early age of 48 in London. After him, his student and nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan continued his legacy.
