Feminist Movement in Pakistan
Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal to define, establish, and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the genders. In literal meanings, feminism means the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. The feminist movement was criticized by many people. People start making bad thoughts about the movement due to lack of knowledge and information. There was a thought that these women asking for equal rights want to dominate the men and wanted to take over everything and to rule over the world.
Though that was wrong, actually the movement was started for those women who did not get their rights and were treated as slaves of men. The main motive of the movement was to stop rape, make women a strong creature so they can fight for their rights and can stop bad things. Although this was in favor of women but still some women make this movement to use for wrong purposes they wanted to start a new campaign that they are equal to men in every aspect.
Media Role in feminism movement
Men also start taking this movement wrong due to the perspective of some extremist females who claim themselves equal to men and in some cases stronger than men. But the main motive of the movement was not to claim for extra rights for women but to claim for the rights that are already present there and to spread this knowledge media played a very important role in every aspect. Media helped the feminist movement to expand throughout the globe and to explain the main motive of the movement.
Feminists appear rarely and are often demonized. Although they are shown in a personalized and trivialized fashion, though, feminists are so represented less often than “regular” women. Feminists are less often victims, more often have agency, and more often are associated with the goals of the women’s movement than regular women.
Yet feminists’ realm is not that of regular women, feminists are less often associated with day‐to‐day work activities of regular women, and more often with public sphere activities including media and politics. The media reflect and recast feminist issues especially on a useful perspective on the social construction of a political movement. The mainstream media can seldom be accused of being friendly to feminism. In fact, many of the challenges the women’s movement faces can be traced to the way various media-broadcast, print, and film-portray the movement and the issues it has tried to address.
Negative role of media
The media frame feminism and the framing affects society’s acceptance or rejection of the movement and its goals. Media plays a very important role. Instead of showing how vulnerable and helpless women are and how many are victimized every day, media focuses more on how strong women are and the self-defense and entrepreneurship skills of women around us. This helped in empowering women.
