Understanding the concept of Minorities:
Since the beginning of human civilization, minorities have existed in some way. Although the literal meaning if minorities points towards their number and ratio, their segregation is determined not only through their population but also through the characteristics which separate them from the generalizable population be it their ethnicity or their beliefs. Moreover, their segregation is not only spatial but also social. The biggest example of minorities in Pakistan could be religious minorities, such as Christians, Hindus and Ahmadis. Other than religious minorities, there are also gender minorities such as the transgender community as well as ethnic minorities such as, the Afghan refugees and even black people living in Pakistan.
The Ottoman Empire was the dynastic Muslim empire which was founded by the first Ottoman Sultan “Usman” who was the tribal leader of Turk nation. The great Ottoman empire grasped the massive power during 14th and 16th century and occupied the lands of three continents (Asia, Africa, Europe).
The concept of minority was not vividly explained in that time but the treatments of natives to the slaves or the communities which are less populated in the region on the bases of religion, culture, race and language; were merely created the difference between the powerful majority rule and weakness of minority groups.
The influences of Ottoman Emperors in the regions of the huge land they had occupied, could not reduce the ideology of minority from the other generations after the downfall of Ottoman rule. The status of minorities is still leading to nowhere in the middle east Muslim countries that the vicious and rigid laws will never let them live a free life as they need.
When the Ottoman Empire collapse and the region divided into many independent territorial states, the minority communities living in those regions are still suffering from a miserable period due to their religious, ethnic, linguistic and racial differences. There are some explicit problems and loopholes in Islamic sharia implemented by the contemporary teachings of Muftis, which resulted the extremism and fundamentalism in a dreadful way towards minority groups living in Muslim regions.
Contemporary conditions of Minorities in Pakistan:
There are some Christian or Hindu exclusive societies in Pakistan which are an example of spatial segregation. However, many a time, minorities live with everyone else; for example, numerous Hindus and Christians live with Muslims in Pakistan. One other aspect of minorities which varies from country to country or community to community is the rights or general acceptance they are granted.
For example, although the people of Pakistan claim that minorities are given a lot of liberation, they undoubtedly face multiple discrimination unlike countries like Germany or France where minorities are relatively given more rights.
The contemporary condition of religious minorities in Pakistan is in a huge jeopardy merely because the intolerant actions of Muslims on the name of Islam. Many people suffered from perilous civil main societal violence due to the blames or expressing their own religious ideologies in front of Muslim community. There is such a tremendous need to evolve and revolve the concept of minority from the brains of Majority leads that the religiously, racially or linguistic minorities have a complete right to live their lives with full freedom and without interruption in their rituals and prayer.
