What is the role of journalism
We live in a society in which almost everyone is aware of what is happening around them and they have an opinion about it. The basic purpose and role of journalism is to provide information to its audience in such a way that the truth is very clear for them and not the molded truth that higher authorities want them to see. So the question that arises is that who forms those opinions. Generally when we are about to make a choice, we collect information about it and that information is gathered by us through different ways that include news, blogs, articles etc. So is it safe to say that somehow journalism is involved in our daily life decisions without us noticing it?
At first the role of journalism in society was limited and controlled but it has expanded a lot in the past few years. It has been playing a vital role in our daily lives. It became a fourth estate in no time. The knowledge provided to the people through news is the one they trust blindly because they trust their media and believe that what is shown to them is the only truth. Sometimes we may think that journalism is not fulfilling its role as it should have.
Journalists are biased?
We may see that some channels are being partial about a certain product or political preference and they take sides when doing a review or giving comments. Yes, it is true to some extent as in today’s world journalism has somehow lost it original purpose that was to educate the audience so they can make correct decisions about their future. Be it about any product that is in the market or any candidate of a political party who is asking for vote, everything we chose was due to the opinion made by our media. Journalism has also lost its credibility due to taking sides and sometimes leaving their ethical values for getting news.
Yet we cannot give the tag of being partial to every journalist or to the whole field of journalism. We can agree that some channels are partial but there are journalists who have sacrificed a lot just to be fair with their field. Some have lost their lives, some lost their families and some are still doing a lot to get the correct information so that they can guide their people.
Some of them have never done anything unethical to get news. Journalism is a vast term and its role is to guide, inform and entertain without leaving moral and ethical values. It is a huge responsibility that is taken by the journalists.
Journalists can be neutral
Being neutral is one of the most difficult things that as a human we have to do and most of us fail to do so in our daily activities but that’s the role of journalism. It makes you objective. It makes you see on both sides and the person who has the ability to be neutral is a true journalist.
It is never easy to not take sides or sometime tell the harsh reality of your favorite personality to the world but that’s the role one has to fulfill in the field of journalism. Sometimes journalists are pressured by higher officials to be biased but they still do their work impartially. Journalism not only benefits the common citizens but also the individual who is a journalist himself as it helps them work selflessly for the people they don’t even know personally.
Journalists in the eye of citizens
Citizens of a country look up to their journalists for truth and an unbiased opinion. They are dependent on the picture shown to them by the journalists because for them they are the heroes who will save them from falsehood of the world. It is up to the journalists that how they use their influence and power. Although majority of them use it to help the mankind yet some are not able to control their greed.
Journalism makes the journalist more patriotic and more responsible in making people literate. So how can we so easily say that journalism is not playing its role? It is playing its role to the fullest. Just because some of the people are not fair in their jobs so we get to say that each journalist is corrupt.
Every day we get so much information through journalism and we should be thankful to have such hardworking journalists in our society who are not afraid of anything and they go to work every day with their lives on stake and I am very proud of living in such society and not only me every one should be proud to be part of a country in which journalism is free and the journalists are working hard to maintain peace in the country.
