Punjab Announces Scholarships, Laptops and Scooty Scheme for Girls

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said in her message on the International Day of the Girl Child that the provincial government is taking several concrete steps for girls’ education, mobility and empowerment. She said giving daughters equal opportunities in education, health, safety and development is everyone’s shared responsibility, and that daughters are a blessing and a valuable asset of society.

The chief minister said the government has distributed laptops to make education more accessible for girls and is providing scholarships to remove financial barriers so that no girl is deprived of education only because of a lack of resources. A scooty scheme has been launched to ease the daily commute to schools and colleges. The Pink Button project has been introduced to provide a safe environment for girls, while the Women Virtual Police Station ensures immediate police help and protection. Female students are also being given free travel on electric buses.

Maryam Nawaz said empowering girls is the foundation of a strong, prosperous and progressive society. Every girl deserves a safe and supportive environment so she can fulfill her dreams and play a full role in the country’s development, she said. Protecting girls’ rights, promoting their education and taking steps to make them self-reliant are essential, she added.

Education experts say investing in girls’ education improves literacy rates, strengthens the economic condition of families and drives the development of society as a whole. The rise in girls’ enrollment and the steps to reduce dropout rates in Punjab are being seen as important milestones. If these programs are implemented effectively, a marked improvement in the state of girls’ education in the province is expected in the coming years.
