Lancet Warns: Nuclear War, AI Could Wipe Out Humanity by 2100
A new global report from the commission of the renowned medical journal The Lancet has warned that nuclear war and the misuse of artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity by 2100. According to the report, the likelihood of these threats materializing is low, but if they do, the consequences would be devastating and human survival would be at stake.
In the report, titled the Lancet Commission on Global Threats to Health in the 21st Century, 35 experts identified 17 major threats to human health over the next 75 years. Nuclear war and the development of biological weapons with the help of AI were placed in the highest category of extinction risk. The report says that in the event of a nuclear war, so many particles could spread into the upper layers of the atmosphere that sunlight would be blocked, crops destroyed and famine would spread across the world. Similarly, artificial intelligence could be used to build biological weapons that cause destruction on a massive scale.
According to the commission’s co-chair and director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, Professor Christopher Murray, the decisions leaders make today will determine the health and well-being of future generations. The report says all these threats are interconnected and tackling them requires joint and coordinated effort, though a practical and realistic path exists for dealing with each one.
Besides the extinction risk, the other major catastrophic threats identified include air pollution, antimicrobial resistance, child malnutrition, climate change, obesity and cuts in aid by rich countries. The report’s findings were presented at the World Health Summit in Berlin, where more than 4,000 experts from around the world are taking part.
